New Brunswick Tourists Live in RV With 12 Children

A Colorado family visiting New Brunswick this week has taken the idea of a summer camping trip to the extreme.

Dan and Susie Kellogg pulled their RV into the Harding Point Campground in Saint John Wednesday after nearly two years on the road, with their 12 children and family dog.

“We’re lucky most of them are really small,” said Susie Kellogg.

Her husband recalled the events that began their life on the road.

“We were trying to get to kayaking events throughout the state of Colorado and we needed an RV basically to fit us all comfortably to get around to those events. Then we decided to take a longer trip across the country and that was it for us. We were hooked,” he said.

When the trip was over, nobody wanted to go home, said the father. So they decided to sell their house and keep travelling around in the RV.

They’ve now been through more than 20 states and parts of Canada.

The couple said the highlights of their trip to Canada have been white water rafting on the Ottawa River and soaking up the French language in Montreal, but they were excited about New Brunswick too.

“It’s the first time we’ve ever had the RV on a ferry and that’s going to be really cool,” said Dan Kellogg.

The Kelloggs say they try to spend as little time driving as possible.

He works remotely as a software engineer.

The children are homeschooled along the way in math, reading and writing.

“Everything else is things we find on the road. They’re learning geography. They’re learning how to fix the RV. They’re learning history just from travelling. And they’re learning about people and different cultures. It’s an education for us as well,” said the mother.

They say they live more simply than they did when they owned a home, but have been able to fit a surprising amount of stuff in the RV.

“We didn’t really skimp on a whole lot,” she said. You know, we don’t have stuffed animals and all the things that are in bins in normal houses, but we’ve got all of our kayaking gear. The kids have their long boards, and all their helmets and their Legos and their dolls, RC cars. Yeah, we’ve got a lot of stuff with us.”

And if they happen to have more children, she said there’s plenty more room.

“We might need to do a stacker on top or something,” said her husband.
